3 Important Parts of a Mobile Lifting Crane

Author • Mar 30, 2023

A mobile lifting crane is a critical piece of equipment for many construction and industrial projects due to its ability to safely and efficiently lift and move heavy loads.

If you want to rent a crane to complete a project, you need to understand the different machine parts, including what they do, how they work together, and why they are so important to complete intensive tasks efficiently. Read on to find out more.

1. Boom

The boom refers to the long arm that extends from the body of the crane. This part of the crane moves and supports heavy materials and objects, usually suspended midair. You can adjust the boom to reach different heights, depending on the task at hand.

The boom is able to perform these tasks thanks to the powerful hydraulic system, stabilizers, and pulleys along the arm's length. The boom's hydraulic system consists of a series of cylinders that connect to the boom and allow this component to bend, stretch, and move as needed.

The hydraulic fluid in the system drives and controls the cylinders to transfer power. This system also includes a control valve that allows the operator to adjust the pressure and flow of the hydraulic fluid, which allows the operator to customize the boom's movement.

Additionally, safety features are built into the hydraulic system, such as pressure relief valves, that prevent the boom from an overload.

If the force exerted on the boom exceeds the maximum amount of pressure the system can handle, the pressure relief valve will open to release the pressure and prevent damage. This mechanism helps maintain the crane's stability and keeps the operator and the surrounding environment safe.

2. Counterweight

The counterweight helps offset the weight of whatever object the boom arm lifts, which enables the arm to remain stable while in motion. The counterweight section is usually behind the cab and away from the boom.

The crane's counterweight system consists of several heavy blocks that sit at one end of the machine. The system works to create a balance with the weight of the object at the other end of the boom arm. This workaround helps with even weight distribution throughout the crane. This way, the crane won't tip over when you lift a load.

3. Outriggers

Outriggers are important parts of a crane that help provide stability while the crane is in operation, especially on uneven terrain. Uneven terrain poses a huge challenge because the crane needs to remain stable when you begin to lift a heavy object. The outriggers extend away from the crane's base and help spread out the crane's weight as extensions create a stable base.

The outriggers feature an adjustable leg that you can extend and retract. You can easily extend the legs to increase stability or retract them when the machine is in motion. The outriggers also rely on hydraulic cylinders and feature locking pins to keep the crane in place, no matter the terrain.

Some cranes also feature outrigger pads, which are the rubber or metal blocks you place beneath the outriggers to further increase stability. These pads provide a larger ground surface area and provide a firmer grip between the machine and the ground.

Always extend these outriggers before you operate the crane. Take a few moments to confirm that the outriggers have properly extended and locked into place before you start any work.

Before you select a mobile lifting crane for your project, make sure that all these components are present and in proper functional condition. You'll save yourself money (and headaches!) and also ensure that every job site runs safely every single time without fail.

Is your company working on a project where you need to lift something that is immensely heavy or especially oversized? Fixed cranes have long been a go-to piece of equipment for construction companies, outdoor warehouses, and many other types of businesses. But what if you need the ability to move the crane around the work site or lift something on rough terrain? Mobile cranes are growing in popularity due to the benefits they can provide. A mobile crane is much smaller than a typical fixed crane but still capable of providing immense lifting power. Learn why opting for a mobile crane rental for your next project might be the right move. Get Started Quickly When you install a fixed crane on a work site, you will often need to clear the entire area in order to ensure it can be put into place without bumping into any other nearby equipment or causing a safety issue for workers. The crane itself will be brought in using other heavy equipment or heavy-duty vehicles. The setup process is deliberate and will take some time. You will still want to follow basic safety protocols with a mobile crane, of course, but the ability to simply drive the crane to exactly where it needs to be can speed things up. A mobile crane can be fixed to the back of a much smaller vehicle, and you can move it around quickly. This will let you start your project faster. Work in Tight Spaces A fixed crane might be too big to have any chance of getting into the right position, but a mobile crane's smaller footprint could be the perfect fit. Mobile cranes are also ideal for rough terrain where it would be dangerous to try and operate a fixed crane. Transport Easily to Job Sites If your construction company or other business needs to regularly use a crane, going with a mobile crane will make transportation between job sites easier. A large, fixed crane will need to keep special considerations in mind like following traffic laws in regards to oversized loads, but a mobile crane that is placed onto the back of a pickup can be driven with fewer concerns. Have Impressive Lifting Power It might be smaller, but it packs a lot of power into that small footprint. It is possible today to get a mobile crane rental capable of lifting a significant amount of weight. You could look into a crane rental that can handle 15, 30 or even 50 tons without issue. Have a Safer Work Environment You will always want to be mindful of any kind of crane while it is in operation. But a mobile crane's smaller footprint means that fewer people on the work site will have to be alert. A mobile crane can be positioned not only to make the lift easier but to make sure it is always out of the way of other equipment and your employees as much as possible. Make the Cost-Effective Choice Mobile cranes cost less than fixed cranes while still getting the job done. A mobile crane rental is a smart financial move if you will only need it every once in a while instead of all the time. The versatility and efficiency mobile cranes provide can help streamline your next project. 3-B Welding, LLC., has served Ohio as a family-owned and-operated business since 2001.
